Buro turns one year

Thank you to each and every one of you – you have helped to create the Buro with us!

Authors

Hello! Today marks the first anniversary of our investigative media project. On this special occasion, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone of our readers.

Over the year, the editorial team prepared and published 14 exclusive in-depth investigations and a few dozen mini-investigations and investigative news stories.Just a few months after its inception, Buro has become a member of the international consortium against corruption and organised crime, the OCCRP. In the autumn of 2024, three of the four editorial team members were presented with the Volnaye Slova Award in recognition of their investigative work.

We are pleased to report that the project has yielded positive results:

– Following the release of our inaugural investigation, EU countries banned the export of luxury cars to Belarus. This was done to prevent the vehicles from being resold to Russia in circumvention of sanctions.

– After our investigation the United States has imposed sanctions on companies involved in supplying of European equipment to the Russian war machine.

– Following the publication of our investigation into the circumvention of sanctions, European distributors of Alutech have ceased the sale of Belarusian products in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

– The UN has terminated its cooperation with the Belarus Red Cross following our investigation into allegations of corruption within the organisation.

In the coming year, we will continue to raise awareness among Belarusians about corruption and those who undermine the foundations of democracy and violate laws and the rights of citizens.

We hope that the disclosure of new information about corrupt practices will inform the public and facilitate dialogue and public discussion.

Sincerely, the Buro team
